3D tracking using Syntheyes

We're about to start using Syntheyes on a job for one of our clients. Still at the storyboarding stage so there's plenty of room for "worst-case" scenarios, but can anyone give me any pointers re:…Continue

Nottingham/north meetup

Anyone know of a good user group/meetup that isn't based in London? I've seen a couple based in London on Mograph.net (and now this cracking site of course) but quite frankly it's a long way to go…Continue

Good: Great intro, liked the restrained use of flares and Trapcode stuff. Your text animation is snappy and nothing outstays it's welcome either.   Bad: I think you could probably tighten the edit up and knock a few more seconds off the…

It all depends on the nature of the job, how good you are and your location. The best way I've heard is to work out how much money you need to live on comfortably a year, double it then: amount (say £30,000)*2 (in order to account for…

If you're working with music it's often best to have that from the start so you don't have like doubled or tripled render times,

I agree with Chris, a 32-bit exr usually does the trick if you need the latitude that exr gives you. otherwise I stick to 8 and 16bit PSD files. Like Chris I never go above my project framerate unless I know there will be a need to do so because…

Dan Lucyszyn-Hinton replied to Eduardo Ribeiro's discussion 'Windows vs Mac'
There's little to no difference. 99% of applications will work on Windows and Mac; there are irritating quirks with both OSes. It should take you no longer than about 2 hours to get used to working on a Mac if you have to.

How are you serving the video? For motion work I would say that it's crucial for people to read your animation correctly, and therefore a frame rate as close as possible to the original is favourable(ie 25/24/30fps). One option is to give…

Dan Lucyszyn-Hinton commented on Harry Sherman's blog post 'Be a pal and help me with my PAL SETTINGS'
Hi Harry, It's not a PAL problem - it's the DV codec you're using that can't carry an alpha channel. If I have elements to send out then I use uncompressed AVI (if you're on a mac then Quicktime animation/no compression…

Collaboration

Posted on March 10, 2010 at 5:57pm 9 Comments

I've recently really started to get into the idea of working with new people, trying to meet new creative challenges and of course picking up some new techniques.

I have no concrete ideas as yet, but I'd love to hear from you if you have any plans of this nature - particularly something a bit longer than I'm used to producing and with a real narrative to get stuck into.

Comments and ideas to the usual addresses…

Critique and etiquette

Posted on December 9, 2009 at 4:21pm 4 Comments

I was poised to write another rather anodyne appraisal of someone else's showreel on this site recently, when the thought struck me: might I be out of line? I'm all too aware that one of the main reasons people join up here is to get work, not to have what could amount to fairly harsh - although constructive criticism - left on their profile.

If I've critiqued your reel and you didn't like it, let me know! Was it too harsh, was it so soft that I might as well not have bothered? I'm… Continue

Cinema4D Sweepnurbs/tracer bug

Posted on December 3, 2009 at 4:15pm 1 Comment

Just a short note (and I'm open to corrections if there's a way round this issue) to let those still using R11 know about the sweepnurbs/tracer bug I'm currently fighting with.

It occurred a couple of times when we animated the start percentage of a sweep along a tracer - the bug happens right after the first key on the sweep.

The spline appears to glitch every 2 or three frames, closing itself and creating a link to the first point, leaving the user with very noticeable… Continue

Glad to hear that Dan, Ye it's been crazy all year, trying to get ahead but failing. New website coming out in a few weeks which has been keeping me busy outside of regular client stuff, but can't complain eh? Always a hundred things to do, but that's why I love this game, never short of something new to learn, or create. Stay in touch,
Best,
D

I thought it was just a clever ploy to get people on your page! Cheaters always prosper. Didn't watch the special features actually - should I?

Innit! bloody funny the old lady with her relentless hair pulling and barfing rank stuff all over the girl. You watched any of the special features, the dragging to hell shot etc. Ps I didn't click all those pieces of software I'm meant to be proficient at! May have to change that
