Version Cue gone... now what?

So, with CS3, my office had been using, with a decent amount of success, Adobe's Version Cue to track PSD comps and AE projects. We're about to make the jump to CS5 and VC has been nixed entirely so…Continue

If you haven't already, all of us will at some point or another be dealing with demo reels, either for yourself or your company. For the most part, the guidelines are pretty straight forward. For…Continue

Good gig-getting resources?

With the holidays fast approaching (and spurred on by a series of unexpected and wallet destroying home repairs) I've started scrubbing the boards for freelance gigs I can do at night and on the weekends to replenish my cash reserves, but I've been either very unlucky or simply gotten lost in the shuffle.Does anyone have any good sites out there for short-term, work from home gigs that they've had good experiences with. Craigslist is less hit and more miss lately, what with most posters…See More

Version Cue gone... now what?

So, with CS3, my office had been using, with a decent amount of success, Adobe's Version Cue to track PSD comps and AE projects. We're about to make the jump to CS5 and VC has been nixed entirely so we need another solution for versioning.Anyone have any suggestions? What solutions (if any) have you been successful with? We use an SVN repository for versioning other files (HTML, PHP, Flash) but I'm reluctant to just jump on that solution just yet.See More

I'm on the CS5 band wagon and I guess the biggest boon for me is the performance increase. I went from CS4 on Windows Vista 32 to CS5 on Windows 7 64 and it screams. A lot of the work I'm doing is green screen based using Keylight and it…

Loves me my CS5

Broke down, backed up and wiped my system to get Win 7 64 bit and CS5 Master Suite and couldn't be happier. Screaming system, great new toys and a decent source of envy by my friends.

Mocha with AE and Maya

The studio I work for is starting to branch out into new territory and part of our R&D phase will be diving head first into CG and live action compositing. My senior designer and I are both pretty proficient with AE for motion graphics and intermediate comping and correcting. We've recently started getting our feet wet with Mocha. Our in house CG team has experience in lighting, shading, modeling and animation but little to none in real world compositing and rotoscoping so this is new…See More

Thanks Kyle. Our CG guys work almost exclusively in Maya, layering in Nuke with certain shots done in Hypershot. All the mograph, color correction, retouching and comping work is done by myself and my senior designer in After Effects and Photoshop.

Dude, that is some super good photorealistic work right there. What software do you use? My only complaint would be that the music was a little generic.

Good tips on the selection of a track for your demo reel. I definitely agree with your points. The legal issue is that I feel a lot of people should be aware of, even if it's just a nugget to keep in the back of their heads. On a legal level…

I love my Wacoms, but I reserve their use primarily for photo retouching and texture painting or just plain ole drawing. I might be the odd man out here, but I'm a trackball guy. I have big hands and I've never really been comfortable with…

My first tutorial

Pretty proud of myself today. I haven't created the sheer amount someone like Harry has, but my first AE tut went online today at tutsplus:

New site, new header, new ambition

Posted on March 3, 2010 at 12:13am 0 Comments

It's been nearly a week and my old blog pages are slowly metamorphosing into the portfolio of work the domain was originally meant for.

I successfully took the layered PSD used to create the images into AE and animated into a looping Flash header that, frankly, I'm pretty proud of.

Only web design content is available and the navigation is still be worked in, but things are beginning to take shape nicely.…

Basically, it's a way to create a dynamic Spirograph in AE without importing custom shapes or faking it with paths. I use a very specific formula to create what's called either a Hypotrochoid or Epitrochoid (sounds like something out of Star Trek) by mapping points in XY space. I'm gonna render out a few tests.

I'm using trapcode particular to create these patterns, but AE Expression god Dan Ebbert apparently did just that, only using the Write-On effect with a very similar formula. At its core, it can create some very sweet patterns and ultimately add up to create some great particle effects.
